What is guard sword?

A guard sword, also known as a hand-and-a-half sword, is a type of sword that was popular in Europe during the medieval period. It is characterized by a longer blade than the typical one-hander sword, usually measuring between 36 and 42 inches in length, and a longer handle that can be gripped with both hands.

The guard sword had a crossbar (also called a guard) that was designed to protect the hand during combat. The crossbar could be straight or curved and was typically made from metal and sometimes elaborately decorated with engravings or other metalwork. The pommel (the knob at the end of the sword) was also typically larger and heavier than on a one-handed sword, and sometimes was shaped for use as a blunt weapon.

Guard swords were used primarily by knights and other mounted warriors who needed a longer sword with more reach. They were often used in conjunction with a shield in battle. The guard sword was also popular for use in tournaments and fencing practice. With the advent of firearms, the use of the guard sword declined, but it remains a popular collectible item among sword enthusiasts and history buffs.
